LAMENT FOR KOSOVO by the Australian composer Betty Beath in a joint performance given by the Providence Mandolin Orchestra and Het CONSORT in the Zuiderkerk in Zwolle (Netherlands) on the 5th of July 2008. Betty Beath wrote about the work, "It was a time when the tragic events were taking place in what was previously Yugoslavia were constantly before us in graphic images; since then the tragedy has widened to many parts of the world. At the time of writing I was also concerned with the fragility and decline of my mother. Feelings of deep sadness and anger were uppermost in my heart and mind. A composition that expresses sorrow for the suffering of all innocent people caught up in war and destruction.". The version of the LAMENT FOR KOSOVO by the Providence Mandolin Orchestra & HET CONSORT is the first incarnation of the work. The composer later developed it as a composition for piano solo and again, later developed the work for string orchestra. In November 2006 it was performed, opening the program of a Peace Concert held in the Konzerthaus, Vienna, under the patronage of UNESCO. The concert was dedicated to the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Baroness Bertha von Suttner (1905) and the performance was given by the First Austrian Woman's Orchestra conducted by Christian Benda. |
